A recap of 2023

At the end of each year, I usually write a full recap of everything I’ve done throughout the past 365 days.

This time, the recap will be much shorter as this year contained more days I’d like to forget than days I’d like to remember. Due to strain caused by events happening in my personal life, I’ve been struggling finding energy to do things I want to do well.

A recap of 2020 original

by Freek Van der Herten – 35 minute read

What a year this has been. I guess that in January, nobody suspected that we'd got ourselves a worldwide pandemic on our hands.

For many people, 2020 has been a pretty rough year. While the pandemic also impacted me, I think that the problems I have only exist in my head. Nobody around me had health or financial troubles, and I also don't have any complaints on those fronts. That makes me a very lucky man.

In this blog post, I'd like to reflect on the things I did in 2020.

A recap of Laracon EU 2017

Devron Baldwin wrote down a few words on the excellent Laracon EU conference, edition 2017.

The awesome talks and the amazing people made Laracon EU 2017 an experience to remember. I’ll split this up into a few sections to talk about the non-technical and the technical talks. I found myself enjoying the non-technical talks slightly more than the technical this year.

I can't believe it' already over and am already looking forward to Laracon EU 2018.

A recap of Laracon US 2017

Laracon US 2017 was an amazing conference. Sid published this excellent recap that contains many links to slides and related content.

I attended my first Laracon in person and I have to say I really enjoyed the experience — maybe more than I expected to. It was well organised and the talks were diverse, informative and actionable. Day 1 was all technical and mostly revolved around Laravel. Day 2 had a different mix of talks and the non-technical ones were thought-provoking and entertaining.

Looking back on the year

Laravel News published a nice overview of what happened in the Laravel ecosystem in 2016.

As 2016 is coming to a close it’s a great time to look back on the year and see just how much progress has been made. Laravel had a busy year with 5.3 being released, Laracon, updates to all the components, and now gearing up for the Laravel 5.4 release.

To look back on the year I’ve put together a list of some of the hits of 2016 and arranged them by month so you can get a quick overview of all the highlights.

The Laravel ecosystem sure is moving fast. For me the best new software that emerged from it was Laravel Valet. I use it for most projects now and can't imagine working on a Vagrant box anymore for my normal day to day work. Hopefully Valet will gain more recognition in the greater PHP community in 2017.

I'm also happy to report that the Laravel / PHP packages my company releases have grown in popularity in 2016.

A retrospective on creating Laravel Shift

Laravel Shift is a paid service that can upgrade a Laravel project. I've used it a couple of times. Although some manually work is needed to complete the upgrade, it has saved me many hours. The service has recently shifted it's 1000th project, a major milestone. In a post on his blog Jason shares how he started the service and where it's going in the future.

In this post, I want to focus more on reaching the milestone of 1,000 Laravel applications upgraded. This may not sound like many, however for my first SaaS product it marks the achievement of my stretch goal. So allow me to share the most important decision, biggest challenge, and what the future holds for Laravel Shift.

Laracon EU recap day 2

Here's Simon Nicklin's recap of day two of the excellent Laracon EU conference: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/laracon-eu-2016-conference-day-2-simon-nicklin

Personally I had a great time at Laracon. I couldn't relax that good until after I delivered my own talk. Luckily it went well and I got some good feedback. It was very good to see both new and familiar faces. Most talks were excellent, and the venue was amazing. Just look at this picture:

Laracon

I'll be sure to attend next year's Laracon!
