Emma Bostian demonstrates some lesser known HTML elements.
HTML is a powerful markup language which can be used to give our web applications structure and provide powerful accessibility benefits, but only when used appropriately. Thus, today we’ll discover ten HTML elements you might not have known existed in the hopes that you can create more accessible, and structurally-sound web applications.

I always knew the browser was pretty smart about dealing with what I thought was incomplete HTML, but I didn't know the HTML5 spec actually defined a bunch of tags as optional ?

Dave Rupert, lead developer at Paravel, shows how you can leverage native form validation and still style your errors using only a couple of lines of JavaScript.
If you’ve ever experimented with HTML5 Form Validation, you’ve probably been disappointed. The out-of-box experience isn’t quite what you want. Adding the required attribute to inputs works wonderfully. However the styling portion with input:invalid sorta sucks because empty inputs are trigger the :invalid state, even before the user has interacted with the page. I finally sat down and spent a couple days trying to make HTML5 Form Validation work the way I want it.

Wes Bos shares a quick tip to make phone numbers on websites tappable.
I’m talking about when phone numbers on a website aren’t tapable. Often the HTML is so that mobile operating systems cannot select the phone number alone and you are forced to remember/recite or write down the actual number. So, when you put a phone number on a website, don’t just use any old element, use a link with the tel protocol.

James Holderness recreated the Donkey Kong Game & Watch without JavaScript. Amazing work.
There are two things I’ve always wanted to try in HTML: generating a photorealistic image using CSS, and creating an interactive game without the need for JavaScript. HTML Kong is the end result of those two ambitions – a reproduction of the Game & Watch video game, Donkey Kong, using just HTML and CSS.For those of you that haven’t heard of it, Game & Watch was a line of LCD handheld video games from the 1980s. The Donkey Kong title was probably one of the most popular in the series, selling more than a million units worldwide. The game was split over two screens and built into a distinctive clamshell casing.
