Creating a multiplayer snake game in PHP

On the sitepoint blog Bruno Skvorc explains some of the inner works of the PHP version of snake created by Andrew Carter.

At a recent conference in Bulgaria, there was a hackathon for which Andrew Carter created a PHP console version of the popular “snake” game.

I thought it was a really interesting concept, and since Andrew has a history of using PHP for weird things, I figured I’d demystify and explain how it was done.

Game & Watch LCD Donkey Kong recreated with HTML and CSS

James Holderness recreated the Donkey Kong Game & Watch without JavaScript. Amazing work.

There are two things I’ve always wanted to try in HTML: generating a photorealistic image using CSS, and creating an interactive game without the need for JavaScript. HTML Kong is the end result of those two ambitions – a reproduction of the Game & Watch video game, Donkey Kong, using just HTML and CSS.

For those of you that haven’t heard of it, Game & Watch was a line of LCD handheld video games from the 1980s. The Donkey Kong title was probably one of the most popular in the series, selling more than a million units worldwide. The game was split over two screens and built into a distinctive clamshell casing.

Reprogramming Super Mario World

This guy beats Super Mario World in 6 minutes. He uses the credits warp glitch to reprogram the game while playing it.

The exploit works by transferring control to sprite X-position table via the chuck eating glitch so that the game executes the X-position of sprites as if it were code. Using koopa shells, the X-position table can be filled with values which switches the game from mode 0x14 (normal level execution) to 0x1C (midway through the credits).

EDIT: Today Carlsagan42 finished the game under 2 minutes.
